Towns learn how to acquire community buildings
Our ‘Acquiring and Managing Community Buildings’ course on March 13th went off successfully. Groups from all over Somerset travelled to Shepton to hear Stephenie Linham from the Directory of Social Change. Stephenie is a national expert on the subject of local authority asset transfer and she was able to give the latest news of the Department for Communities and Local Government pilot project on Asset Transfer.
We were very pleased that groups we are working with in Minehead were able to send representatives and others from almost as far across Somerset About half those attending were involved with plans to take on land and buildings and half already had taken on responsibility for land and buildings so it was a good mix. Also District officers were able to join us and add to the debate on local authority asset transfer. In total 23 people attended the course.

The course covered the issues communities should consider when working with local authorities and public bodies to achieve asset transfer, and the structures, funding, and business planning involved in taking on a community building from a local authority or public body, in the afternoon we looked at some of the legal requirements for managing a community building.
Notes on the course will be available here soon.

Clive Sills and Rick Coldicott (Langport Area Development Trust) discuss ideas with Guy Braga (Mendip District Council) and Alex Stevens (Taunton Deane Borough Council)
We are very grateful to ViSTA our partner in the Rural Action Partnership funded by DEFRA, for their assistance in organising this event.
