Hidden Somerset - the sustainable tourism website

Somerset residents and visitors alike are being given the chance find out more about Somerset through a new and exciting website promoting ‘off the beaten track’ tourism.

Hidden Somerset (www.hiddensomerset.com) is a not for profit website, coordinated by the Community Council for Somerset, promoting the smaller, lesser-known attractions, tourism related businesses and rural communities. The website offers a wealth of information on places to stay, places to eat and things to do, all in the lesser known areas of Somerset. The site also features local events offering a variety of things to see and do across the county that you might otherwise not get to hear about.

Project worker Rachel Smith said, ‘Tourism plays a vital contribution to the Somerset economy and Hidden Somerset recognises the importance of the rural localities and the role they play in the local industry. Hidden Somerset provides a comprehensive and up-to-date facility, with which visitors can plan a stay or a day out specific to their interest and budget’.

Hidden Somerset was initially conceived after the 2001 foot and mouth crisis which highlighted the fragility of the rural economy.  Since this time, funding has been secured from the Levels and Moors Leader+ Programme and Somerset Rural Renaissance Partnership to develop the project and it is expected that the website will play an important role in supporting rural communities and promoting them via the internet.
