Somerton loses out after Cycling event cancelled
A major cycle race has had to be cancelled, after County Highways refused to approve road closures.
The Tour of Wessex Premier Calendar race would have drawn around 120 professional cyclists to the town in May as well as sports channel television cameras and scores of spectators.
Another race, the Cyclosportive, that was due to take place during the same weekend will continue.
Event director Nick Bourne said the Somerton area would have gained around £70,000 from the Premier Calendar race but it had to be axed because of safety fears and high policing costs.
